integrateIT employee Rachel Ruhe chose to support the Cookies for Kids' Cancer Organizationwith her annual company charitable contribution. Here's why:
This year was a very special year for our family as we welcomed our daughter in May. One of the things we attribute to Annie making her arrival was that I had spent all day baking chocolate chip cookies on the day that my water broke. On a more somber note, cancer runs in both of our families. Three out of four of my grandparents have passed away from cancer, my father-in-law in a cancer survivor. One of the scariest things that I could ever imagine is having my daughter diagnosed with a form of childhood cancer. The more research that is done the more likely we are to be able to find cures so that no more children ever have to go through that type of ordeal. I came across the Cookies for Kids Cancer organization and was extremely impressed with the grass-roots approach that they took. It was the simplicity of baking cookies and hosting bake sales to raise money for pediatric cancer research - anyone could do it, even myself. I was also pleased to see that with the money raised 90% of the funds go directly TO research and is not part of the overhead of running a charity.
